What is a wrinkle?

Wrinkles, creases or expression lines are signs of aging skin. They are caused by both normal aging and premature damage which impact and weaken the underlying support structure of the skin, causing a loss in elasticity or the ability to bounce back.

 

What causes wrinkles?

Intrinsic aging is the natural process that includes factors we cannot control. The skin’s metabolism slows, causing less collagen production and weaker elastin. 

The development of new skin cells slows down and turns over less frequently. We lose body fat, muscle strength and bones shrink in the facial region. Hormones also play an important role.

Extrinsic aging is influenced by external factors that we can control. Sun exposure is the main contributor to premature aging, combined with other environmental factors such as pollution and smoking. 

In addition to the natural gravity, our sleeping positions and repetitive facial movements may also play a role. In addition to wrinkles, chronic sun exposure can lead to photoaging
